A Day in the Life of a Content Creator
Meet Lily: the face behind the sour. Whether she’s whipping up a sour cereal taste test or turning TikTok trends into Brain Blasterz gold, Lily’s the in-house content wizard who brings the wild energy to your feed. From sour gunk explosions to Halloween madness (aka Sour-ween), she’s proof that a scroll-stopping TikTok is just one outrageous idea (and a whole lot of sour candy) away.
Q: What do you do for Brand Hatchers? (E.g., Reels, TikToks, challenges, etc.)
A: I’m the in-house content creator, mainly creating content for Brain Blasterz’ TikTok account in the form of sour challenges, skits and trends. I also create the video content for Amazon listings across all Brand Hatchers brands.
Q: How did you get started with Brand Hatchers?
A: I had been creating content as a hobby for four years alongside working in TV and Film. I realised social media was what I really wanted to pursue and thrived off making quality content and seeing engagement results. I knew eventually I’d like to go full time into creating content and finally took the leap in early 2024. When the position came up at Brand Hatchers I was excited by the opportunity to create content
MORNING MAYHEM
Q: What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
A: I hate to admit it, but the first thing I do when I wake up is pick up my phone and scroll through TikTok!
Q: Morning routine must-haves?
A: A cup of coffee whilst scrolling in bed, followed by breakfast (I can’t eat sour sweets on an empty stomach!) as well as skincare routine before getting ready. This all helps me to ease into the day – I feel stressed if I’m rushing around!
Q: How do you get into creative mode first thing? (Candy, coffee, music, etc.)
A: I like to listen to podcasts whilst I’m getting to ready to film! I find it helps sometimes to listen or watch things non-related to TikTok so my own ideas flow, as opposed to clogging my brain with too much inspiration.
Q: Describe your mood when you know it’s a Brain Blasterz filming day!
A: As worried as I get about getting sour tongue burn, I have a lot of fun filming Brain Blasterz content as it needs a lot of up-beat energy, so I do always look forward to it! Particularly when there’s a fun trend going around and it’s time to do Brain Blasterz’ version.
CREATIVE CHAOS
Q: What’s a “typical” content creation day like for you?
A: I check TikTok for any potential trends that I can utilise, but I usually start by looking in my content calendar for what’s coming up and/or what urgently needs filming. I’m often a week or so ahead in content so I do usually get to pick and choose what to film based on how I can make the most of a certain set up, or what video idea I fancy creating that day!
Q: Where do your content ideas come from?
A: Often when I think of one idea, I find that the rest coming flowing in too. I do get a lot of inspiration from TikTok itself, in particular the lip-syncing audios! I also love pop culture/online meme moments so I try to use those moments when I can. I also like to get the audience involved as much as possible so I’ll use their comments as video inspiration too!
Q: What tools/apps do you use to shoot/edit?
A: I shoot everything on my iPhone and then I use CapCut to edit, or I sometimes edit within the TikTok app!
Q: How long does it usually take to go from idea → finished post?
A: It depends week on week – if it’s a trend then it’s filmed and posted within a day. Other ideas without a time frame can be anywhere from a week to a month, depending on what I prioritise!
Q: Funniest or most chaotic behind-the-scenes moment so far?
A: The sour McDonald’s burger has gone down in Brain Blasterz history, but anything filmed in the office was chaotic too! Chew balls everywhere, hard candy all over the floor, sour gunk all over tables and even popping candy on pizzas!
FAVORITE BITS
Q: What’s your favourite piece of Brain Blasterz content you've made? Why?
A: There’s so many to choose from! The weird combinations are always a lot of fun to make and see people’s reactions (not as fun to eat though!). But really, any video I made throughout Halloween (or should I say Sour-ween!) was my favourite. I think it’s the most creative I’ve been so far as it’s the best time of year to be a part of a sweet brand!
Q: Favourite product to feature in your videos (and why)?
A: I always find myself naturally reach for sour gunk because there’s so much theatre with it. It’s messy, it’s pourable, I can add it to anything. It’s a lot of fun whenever it’s involved!
Q: Wildest reaction you’ve had on camera from trying Brain Blasterz?
A: Probably when I tried the sour cereal – it was the worst! Think sour, sloppy and bright green.
CREATOR TIPS
Q: Top tip for other creators working with wild, fun brands like Brain Blasterz?
A: Try everything and never stop discovering new ideas! My style of Brain Blasterz content is the result of so much trial and error and that’s the best way to approach social media. Some ideas will work and some ideas won’t, but the main thing is to keep having fun with it.
Q: How do you keep things fresh, sour, and exciting?
A: It sounds counterproductive but I always look back on the content that performs well and I slightly reinvent it. TikTok is a very repetitive platform in terms of success, so I see what products I haven’t used in a while to keep it fresh and then see how I can create fun content out of it that people have already enjoyed. Every so often I like to push the boundaries a bit more and add a bit of shock factor which definitely keeps it exciting. I also like to think of lots of different scenarios in which people need/want sweets in their day, as there’s only so many times people will want to see simply ‘sour reactions’ from me. When I do eventually create sour reaction videos, I find they have more impact than if it was constantly the same content!
QUICK FIRE ROUND (just answer fast + fun!)
Q: Sweet or sour?
A: Sweet (sorry!)
Q:TikTok or Instagram?
A: TikTok
Q: Record in the morning or late night?
A: Late night
Q: Snack of choice (besides Brain Blasterz)?
A: Dairy Milk chocolate
Q: Most embarrassing or hilarious filming moment?
A: We all laughed a lot filming the National Sour Candy Day clips!
FINAL THOUGHTS
Q: One thing you love most about being a Brain Blasterz content creator?
A: I really enjoy that I feel quite close to the Brain Blasterz audience (regardless of whether their comments are pleasant or not!)
Q: Anything you want to say to your followers or future creators?
A: If you feel like putting yourself out there and posting content – take the leap! You never know what opportunities are out there for you that could only be one TikTok away.
